SOUTHEND, Sask. – Saskatchewan Mounties have seized booze they say was destined for northern communities where alcohol is prohibited. Officials say around 60 vehicles were searched at the junction of highways 102 and 905 near Southend on Feb. 27 and 28.
Officers seized 98 bottles of hard liquor, 100 cans of beer and 28.5 grams of cannabis marijuana.

“The results of this initiative speaks to the hard work and dedication of the RCMP members who work at these detachments with respect to keeping these substances out of our communities,” said Staff Sgt. Carmela Schneider from the RCMP North District management team.
Police also laid seven charges of unlawful display, keeping or directly/indirectly selling or offering to sell alcohol, a charge of assaulting a peace officer, an impaired driving charge and three charges of possession of a control substance.

RCMP officials say check stops occur regularly throughout Saskatchewan and detachments will continue with their efforts to prevent alcohol from entering communities where it is prohibited.
