LETHBRIDGE- Mayor Chris Spearman is apologizing after he posted a photo to his personal Facebook page.
Spearman was in Banff for discussions on curbside recycling, but it’s his activity on social media that was raising eyebrows.
The photo he posted was of a t-shirt he saw displayed in a store window in Banff.
He apparently thought it was funny, but not everyone agreed and reaction on social media was instant.
The t-shirt has a list of reasons why hockey is better than women.
The first reason listed seems to be the issue with most people. It reads: “In hockey, everyone likes it rough.”
Spearman’s post was shared on Twitter, and a flurry of exchanges between users and the mayor ensued.
Lots of people chimed in on the post, most saying the picture makes it look like Spearman supports sexual violence against women.

Fellow Councilors also chimed in on the post. Jefferey Coffman made his stance clear by posting this tweet, saying it was inappropriate.
Spearman apologized for his post, saying it was indeed inappropriate and he never meant to offend anyone.
Some people did jump to his defense, saying the sexual violence reference was taken too far, and it was just a joke.
Spearman has removed the photo from his Facebook account and has posted an apology.
