TORONTO — Touched by the death of a young fan, British actor Benedict Cumberbatch wrote a personal letter to her grieving family.
Eve Shepherd, who was born prematurely at 28 weeks and underwent more than 200 operations during her short life, was a fan of Cumberbatch’s series Sherlock. She died at 14.
The actor’s letter was read at Shepherd’s funeral this week in Warrington, England.

“I wish I could be there but sadly am filming the show she loved,” wrote Cumberbatch, who was nominated for an Oscar for The Imitation Game.
“I send my deepest sympathies to Eve’s family. To lose someone so young who fought for her health all her life must be beyond endurance.”
He added: “I hope they can take solace from the fact that she was clearly much loved and her support of our show is hugely appreciated and shall be remembered.
“God rest her soul. With all my love and sympathies, Benedict xxx.”
The fourth season of Sherlock is in production now and is expected to debut next year. In Canada, the series airs on Showcase.
