EDMONTON – Finance Minister Robin Campbell announced this week that Alberta is still on track for a $465-million surplus, but don’t expect it to last.
It was just a few weeks ago Premier Jim Prentice said Alberta could be heading for a $500-million deficit, so this latest figure represents a near billion dollar turnaround. Campbell warned, though, that Alberta is still facing a $7-billion dollar shortfall in the upcoming budget, which will immediately eat up any surplus the province posts this year.
In Episode 9 of the provincial affairs podcast, Tom Vernon and Robert Murray speak about what the surplus means for the PC messaging heading into the looming election, the announcement that former premier Alison Redford won’t face any charges stemming from her use of government aircraft, and what’s next after the Keystone veto.
