SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon is about to get tough on property owners who don’t clear their sidewalks after a snowfall. City council approved stricter enforcement of a bylaw starting next winter.

This will include more bylaw inspectors actively patrolling for unshovelled sidewalks. Previously, inspectors only investigated if a public complaint was made.

Under the bylaw, commercial property owners will have 24 hours to clear sidewalks while residential property owners will have 48 hours.

Failure to do so will result in a warning for the first offence with tickets being handed out starting with a second offence.

Ward 10 Coun. Zach Jeffries says the stricter enforcement is targeted at those who don’t regularly clear their sidewalks.

“People don’t need to be fearful that if they go away for a couple of days, or if they’re sick and don’t have the ability to take care of their walk, they’ll be fined,” said Jeffries.

“This is a process for people who are habitually not clearing their sidewalks.”

Fines range from $100 to $1,000 for individuals and $100 to $2,000 for corporations.
