CALGARY – A University of Calgary student is experiencing backlash from her peers after writing an article about why she left sorority life.
Andrea Rojas’ article appears on the cover of The Gauntlet, the university’s newspaper. She says since it hit stands, there have been some acts of vandalism.
The article was printed last Friday and has received a great deal of attention on social media and the Gauntlet’s website.
In the article she says she while wasn’t put through extreme or demeaning hazing practices, she found the group too exclusive and superficial and that the chapter’s main goal was to legitimize itself by keeping up appearances.

“You need to pay a certain amount of fees to be admitted, you go through a round of selection, processes called preference parties where the initiated sisters select you based on a variety of factors including things like how personable you are, how much the like you essentially … whether or not you’re someone they want to associate with over the next four years,” says Rojas.
After the article was printed, people working at The Gauntlet claim that the front of the paper was being turned over in many of the stands or the stands were being knocked over. They also say bundles of the paper have been stolen.
No suspects have been named in connection to the incidents but Rojas’ says she’s seen posts on Facebook from people bragging about the mischief.
The Gauntlet has campus security involved.
Global News has tried to contact the sororities named in the article but our calls were not returned.
