HALIFAX – Vaccination clinics continue today at Acadia University.
They will be taking place for the second day at the Fountain Commons on Acadia University’s campus in Wolfville, N.S.
The meningococcal B vaccine is being made available to all students, as well as faculty and staff with rare health conditions, at no cost.
Health officials in Nova Scotia have ordered enough vaccine for 4,000 people. With an institutional outbreak of meningitis declared at Acadia University, officials are hoping to vaccinate as many students as possible.
The on campus vaccination clinics come nearly three weeks after first year Acadia student, Sarah Hastings died. Hope Maryka, the second student to be diagnosed with the b-strain of meningococcal meningitis, is still in hospital recovering from the disease.
Health officials anticipated giving out 200 to 300 meningitis vaccinations at Acadia Wednesday. By the end of the day they had vaccinated 526 people. Clinics will continue next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
