Saskatchewan Huskies wrestling team takes aim at national gold

Watch above: The Saskatchewan Huskies wrestling team is hoping to pin down gold at the upcoming CIS national championship. Kim Thue looks at two of the ten Huskies heading to nationals.

SASKATOON – For the first four years of his Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) wrestling career, Dylan Bray fell just short of the Canada West final, each and every year. That changed this past weekend, when the four-time Canada West silver medalist finally broke through, capturing his first ever gold.

“It was huge for me,” said a proud Bray, who competes in the 57 kilogram weight class.

“The four years prior, I got second place every time. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. [I was] so happy.”

He now turns his attention to nationals, where he’s been a bronze and silver medalist the past two years. In what will be his final competition at the CIS national level, Bray will be looking for the same result as this past weekend.

“I just have to keep the ball rolling. [Winning] would mean the world. To finish off like that would be amazing.”

Bray isn’t the only Huskie taking aim at national gold. Third-year Annie Montieth is also coming off a Canada West title and will be looking to improve on her fourth place finish at nationals last year.

“I don’t feel like I really peaked for CanWest,” admitted Montieth.

“I feel like I’m training and planning for CIS and so I think our whole team has a lot of confidence [heading into nationals].”

Montieth credits the strong team of Saskatchewan Huskies for her success, a group that will be sending ten athletes to nationals.

“I think a lot of people think of wrestling as an individual sport but really it helps so much when you have people who are as dedicated and committed to the sport as you are as training partners.”
