Golfing in February? What the warm temperatures mean for Calgary

WATCH: As temperatures swing from coast to coast, some western Canadian cities are experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures while the east coast digs out. Ross Lord and Reid Fiest report.

CALGARY – Golfers may soon be teeing off during rare February tee times in Calgary due to spring-like temperatures in the city.

Fox Hollow Golf Course says it’s days ways from opening on temporary greens.

With temperatures hovering around 10 degrees Celsius over the last week, golfers are ready to hit the links.

“We’re getting 10, 12 calls phone calls a day,” said Golf Pro Greg Griffith. “People are coming down, asking if we’re open.”

“If we get a little bit of melt at night, there’s no reason we can’t go within a day’s notice.”

Over the weekend, Castle Mountain Resort near Pincher Creek announced it was closing for the season.

Mountain users were avoiding grassy patches over ice patches, after the resort received only 30 per cent of the snow that normally falls.

In Calgary, most of the white stuff has melted, but not because the city hasn’t received a good snowfall this winter.

Environment Canada says the city has actually received 80 per cent more snow than normal in November, December and January, but it’s just been so warm since, it’s almost all melted.

“The air that would typically be over northern California and Nevada has displaced, for the most part further north, so that’s brought warmer temperatures to British Columbia and Alberta,” said Environment Canada Meteorologist Bill McMurtry.

In North Vancouver, many ski hills have also had to close down for the season.

At Grouse Mountain, staff are now focusing on spring outdoor activities.

“We’d all love the snow to come back, but we’re preparing to move forward and make things the best that they can be, even if the snow doesn’t come back,” Grouse Mountain’s Jacqueline Blackwell told Global News.

Lower mainland golf course are also open and lush with the above-average temperatures.

That trend is forecast to continue into the next few weeks, and likely into March, April and May.

Environment Canada says the west will remain warm, and central and eastern parts of the country can expect cooler conditions.
