Students at UBC Okanagan have formed a new club in response to the university opening an animal research facility on campus.
Students for Animal Awareness met last night on campus to start dialogue about the testing facility.
“We just want to introduce ourselves,” says Lindsay Diehl, club spokesperson. “We want people to know that there is such a group on campus.”

The talk was originally going to include a video presentation from Stop UBC Animal Research, but organizer Brian Vincent was asked not to show a disturbing documentary on animal research. Feeling censored by the group, Vincent canceled his trip to the Okanagan.
Diehl says Students for Animal Awareness is about compassion, non-violence and inclusivity.
“We don’t expect everyone to be hard core Vegans,” Diehl says. “We’re not going to preach to people, we actually just want to talk.”
Diehl says to date, UBC-O has not provided details about the experiments that will be conducted at the new research facility in Kelowna.
The group tells CHBC News UBC used more than 200,000 animals in research last year.
