MONTREAL – The city of Outremont has cancelled a Muslim graduation ceremony at the borough’s community centre.

The event, organized by the Academy of North American Sharia was to be held Saturday evening at 999 McEachran.

Mayor Marie Cinq-Mars made the decision to cancel the ceremony following “disturbing information” broadcast on the TVA Nouvelles network Friday.

The investigative show J.E. alleged that two “fundamentalist” imams, Salah Assawy and Omar Shahin would be attending the event.

In a statement, Cinq-Mars said the presence of the two controversial leaders was unacceptable and likely to cause serious problems.
