WATCH: Chorus of mobile phones plays “Ode to Joy”

TOKYO, JAPAN – A digital choir of 300 mobile handsets and tablets belted out Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” to shoppers in Tokyo on Friday.

Ahead of Valentine’s Day, Google Japan rigged a collection of Android-operated smartphones and tablets to perform in unison.

Each screen portrayed a character singing and dancing, each piping out its own distinctive sound.

The handsets were separated into four sections of vocal range – soprano, alto, tenor and bass.

While the chorus started with a traditional version of “Ode to Joy”, the music soon eventually evolved into a more modern break-beat variation.

The installation also included a sensor, enabling shoppers to “conduct” the choir – the bigger the arm gestures, the more handsets joined in.
