WINNIPEG – Police discovered one of their own shotguns when officers seized a cache of firearms from a home in the River East area earlier this week.
Officers found the service shotgun Monday while at a home on Donwood Drive regarding a “child welfare matter,” according to a police news release.
Police say the weapon had been missing since May 26, 2014 when it was stolen from the trunk of marked police supervisor’s cruiser car. Police did not reveal at the time that they had lost the Remington 870 shotgun, one of the most powerful weapons in their arsenal.
While at the home, officers found a man with an outstanding arrest warrant, along with several firearms and ammunition including the police shotgun which had since been “modified.”
Police released no other information about how the shotgun was stolen from the cruiser car, saying the matter is still under investigation. Why there was no notification to the public about the loss of the weapon is also part of that investigation, police spokesperson Natalie Aitken told Global News Thursday.

The police service says since that incident, shotguns are no longer kept in cruiser cars and an inventory showed all other police firearms are accounted for.
A 28 year old woman and 30 year old man are charged with several firearms related offenses and remain in jail.
