The project is part of a multi-year plan to expand the 17-kilometre line from Scarborough to Unionville.

Metrolinx says the “double-tracking” expansion will allow more train trips and two-way service for commuters in Scarborough, Markham and Stouffville.

The remainder of the 17-kilometres construction and additional station upgrades are still being worked out with construction estimated to begin in 2016.
