Another record year for Saskatchewan agri-foods exports

REGINA – The hard work of Saskatchewan’s farmers is feeding people around the world. According to a Statistics Canada report, the province set a record for agri-food exports for the fourth consecutive year.

Last year, the province exported $13.9 billion in agricultural and agri-food products to 153 countries, a 19 per cent increase from $11.7 billion in 2013. Of those, 15 countries purchased over $200 million in agri-food goods from the province.

“The credit goes to our farmers, ranchers and agri-businesses for producing and exporting what the world needs,” said Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart.”

The provincial government says it continues to work with industry partners and the federal government at building on existing trade relationships and forging new ones.

“Saskatchewan is particularly appreciative of the progress our federal counterparts have made in opening new markets and increasing access in existing markets,” said Stewart.

Nearly $20 million in agricultural funding was announced by the Government of Canada in January at the second annual CropSphere conference in Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan is Canada’s top agri-food exporter and the provincial government hopes to reach $15 billion in agricultural exports within the next six years.
