Park Board expands liquor licensing for Vancouver summer festivals

WATCH: The Vancouver Park Board has approved expanded liquor licences for three big summer events–The Honda Celebration of Light, KitsFest and Voices in the Park. Linda Aylesworth reports.

Try as it might, Vancouver has not been able to shake its reputation as “No Fun City.”

But a vote by the Vancouver Park Board Monday night could be a sign that things are changing. The Board unanimously voted in favour of expanding the liquor licences for the Honda Celebration of Light fireworks festival, KitsFest, and the Voices in the Park concert.

Park Board Chair John Coupar says the expanded licences are more about helping the events survive than promoting fun.

“It helps the events be sustainable and we’ve had no problems with any of these events,” he says. “They’re all first-class events for Vancouver and we’re glad they’re coming back.”

The Celebration of Light will add two new licensed areas, increasing capacity by over 1,000. KitsFest will increase the capacity of its licensed area from 500 to 800. Sarah McLachlan’s Voice in the Park benefit concert also got the go-ahead to add a licensed area.
