Naheed Nenshi awarded the 2014 World Mayor Prize

Mayor Nenshi is the number one mayor in the world, according to a group that’s been ranking mayors around the world for more than a decade.

Nenshi is the winner of the 2014 World Mayor Prize, an honour awarded every two years by the City Mayors Foundation, an international urban research institute.

In a news release, the foundation said it chose Nenshi because “he is an urban visionary who doesn’t neglect the nitty-gritty of local government”.

It stated “Mayor Nenshi is a role model for decisive management, inclusivity and forward thinking”.

The award recognizes mayors who have made outstanding contributions to their community.

Mayor Nenshi is the first Canadian recipient. He beat out 25 other nominees, including the mayors of Ghent, Belgium and Surabaya, Indonesia.

The organization said Nenshi will be presented with the World Mayor Prize trophy later this year.
