U of L student competing for Miss Universe Canada

Monika Horvat is throwing her name in the ring to compete for Miss Universe Canada. Global News

LETHBRIDGE- At 24-years-old, Monika Horvat is eager to take on the world. She’s decided the best way to do it is by throwing her name in the ring to compete for Miss Universe Canada.

“I think this is a good way of showing that a well educated woman can represent Canada as an ambassador.”

The Calgary native is majoring in economics at the University of Lethbridge and plans to put as much effort in to the pageant as she does her education.

“Why be average or mediocre when you can be the best you can be in something. I’ve been on the dean’s list for four years at the university here, and I want to empower myself and better myself in every single aspect.”

Horvat moved to Canada from Serbia when she was just three-years-old, and wants to show women around the world that beauty and brains are an unstoppable force.

“People will have stereotypes towards someone who is both beautiful on the inside and out, but it is all about empowering women, especially because these women are taking on a diplomatic roll once they go into Miss Universe Canada.”

The strong willed student is enlisting the help of fitness consultant and friend Paul Carmen with Peeled Nutrition and Fitness to ensure her inner strength shines all the way through.

“I want people to see that she has some muscle, she’s strong, she’s got lots of energy, her skin looks good and that she’s able to still look good without having to starve herself  or go to those kinds of extremes, adds Carmen.

Horvat will be strutting her stuff in Toronto in May. Win or lose, she’s determined to get everything she can from the experience.

Between now and show time, Horvat will be fundraising for her trip to Toronto, including a night at Cowboys Nightclub. Anyone wanting to donate to Horvat’s journey can click here.
