LAKE COUNTRY – It has been bursting at the seams but not for much longer. The cramped Lake Country Foodbank received a huge boost Tuesday after learning it was one of the grand prize winners of an online contest. It’s a cash prize that will now be used to build a bigger and better facility.
The Lake Country foodbank operates out of an 800 square foot space at the back of the old Winfield school. It’s so small that some of the food has to be kept in a mobile storage outside. Not only that, but the school district has the building up for sale and the foodbank would eventually have to relocate.
However, the foodbank has won $100, 000 dollars thanks to the annual Aviva Insurance online contest. The first two rounds were based on public online votes and the final winners were selected by a panel of judges.
The District of Lake Country has made land available for a new foodbank and the cash prize will allow construction to get underway this spring which is sooner than expected.
