Vancouver B.C. teacher shortlisted for global teacher prize

VANCOUVER – Mark Reid teaches band, choir, symphony orchestra and theatre at Vancouver Technical Secondary School.

He is also one of three Canadian teachers shortlisted for the Global Teacher Prize, which is a one-million dollar award “from the Varkey Foundation to be given to a super-special teacher.”

Reid is nominated along with Steve Revington, who teaches at Emily Carr Public School in London, Ontario, and Glenn Wagner, who teaches at Centre Wellington District High School in Fergus, Ontario. There are 50 nominees in total for the prize, but Reid is the only one from B.C.

Aside from his teaching duties at Vancouver Tech, he also teaches orchestra at Saint James Music Academy, which is a program for vulnerable children who would not have the chance to play music otherwise.

Reid is no stranger to recognition for his work as he was the MusiCounts Teacher of the Year in 2013. He has also developed a purpose-built music theory and program, that is now in use at two other schools.
