Boy, 3, dies of invasive streptococcal infection

TORONTO – A three-year-old boy died over the weekend after contracting invasive streptococcal infection.

The boy came down with a fever caused by Group A streptococcus infection while at the Woodfield Daycare Centre at Duke of Connaught Public School.

The bacteria is the cause of strep throat and is often found in the throat but becomes invasive when it infects the blood, spinal cord or fluid surrounding the brain.

According to Toronto Public Health, the bacteria are spread through direct contact with “secretions” from the nose or throat of infected people.

The risk of infection is low, according to the public health agency, but the risk can be increased when living in the same house, sharing a bed, or having direct contact with someone who is infected.
