City committee recommends more changes to reserved Park and Ride spots

CALGARY – The city is once again reviewing reserved spots at Park and Ride lots.

Calgary Transit says it will look at reserved parking on a lot by lot basis after receiving a series of complaints from the public. A committee has requested transit review the percentage of lots being reserved and look at lowering the parking fees in lots where there is no demand.

The committee is also recommending the ability for users to book spots using their cell phones, similar to the system Park Plus users employ.

The city says there’s nothing it can do about the biggest complaint: those hoping to park for free finding only empty spaces in the reserved lots. The city says people who have paid for them have the right to use them when they want.

“Folks who reserve spots reserve them precisely so they can go later and still have a spot,: says Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

While the reserved parking system got off to a slow start in April, it appears transit users are realizing the $70 fee a month is a deal; just 645 spots were taken in April – that has since grown to 1,738 paid spots.

The new recommendations will be brought before city council for review.
