SASKATOON – A piece of Saskatchewan’s heritage was recognized with a proclamation Wednesday. The provincial government has declared Jan. 21, 2015 the first-ever “curling day” in Saskatchewan.
CURLSASK submitted the request in hopes this day will encourage more curlers to head to more than 150 local clubs and hurry hard. In 2001, the Saskatchewan government announced curling as the official sport of the province.

“Schmirler, Richardson, Holland … Saskatchewan has a rich history where curling is concerned and our government is proud to celebrate and support the growth of our provincial sport,” said Mark Docherty, the minister of parks, culture and sport.
“That’s why we offer programs such as the Community Rink Affordability Grant, so that curling rinks across Saskatchewan may continue to serve as favourite gathering places within our communities.”
The government announced in September 2014 it would offer the grant for a third consecutive year. It awards indoor ice facilities with a $2,500 grant to help offset the cost of renovations and maintenance fees.
The government says it as invested over $4.8 million into skating and curling rinks to date, benefitting more than 380 communities across Saskatchewan.
Jan. 21 was specifically chosen to coincide with beginning of the 2015 Viterra Scotties in Assiniboia, Sask. where women will compete for the provincial curling title.
