Viral video helps 2-year-old Vancouver Island boy walk again

WATCH: A 2-year-old with special needs is about to realize his dream — thanks to a video posted by his mother, and the generosity of strangers. Kylie Stanton reports

A viral video of a young Vancouver Island boy taking his first steps has proved to be an example of the positive power of the internet.

Nate Twaddle has Cerebellar Atrophy, a brain condition that impacts the development of speech and motor skills, making walking for the 2-year-old nearly impossible.

That was until Nate was given a walker that helped him take his first steps. Mother Tara was there to capture it on video.

“It was amazing,” she says. “It was so exciting to just watch him go all on his own.”

The video was posted online and quickly went viral.

But after three weeks, the loaner walker had to be returned.

This past weekend Tara started an online fundraising campaign to raise $3,500 for a new walker. The campaign exceeded expectations as viewers of the video helped raise enough funds to buy Nate a walker and then some.
