“The Paddler Movie” premieres in Kelowna

An Okanagan filmmaker is about to see a year-long project come alive on the big screen. It was last January when Carey Missler began shooting “The Paddler Movie”. The film stars another local man, Bob Purdy, who is so determined to raise awareness about environmental issues, he’s been paddling on his stand-up paddle for nearly 1,500 days in a row to get attention. Now, the pair is hoping their new film resonates with others to do their part to make a difference.

Now, after months of piecing it all together, the film is about to make its big debut.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We shot a lot of aerial footage for the movie and just some of the shots we got are amazing it really showcases how beautiful our province and some of the places are,” says Missler.

Shot in the Okanagan and Tofino, the film doesn’t just tell the story of Purdy’s paddling journey, but the journey to change the world.

“We have so many challenges in the world today. Environmentally, socially, economically and if we can get people passionate of something I do that resonates with someone to get them to take some action in some shape, way or form that is awesome that is a win for mother earth,” says Purdy.

While the filmmaking may be complete, the paddling mission is far from over. The 61-year old says as long as his health holds out, he’s in it for the long haul.

“I’ll keep going so I will stop when the challenges we face on the planet go away and I don’t see that happening any time soon so it looks like I will paddling for a while.”

“The Paddler Movie” premieres this Saturday evening at the Kelowna Community Theatre. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15 or $10 on their website.
