Shots fired during police chase in Saskatoon

Watch above: Shots were fired at police officers during a chase which ended when a car was rammed by two police cruisers in downtown Saskatoon. Amber Rockliffe reports.

SASKATOON – Police are currently investigating a firearms-related incident in Saskatoon. A 35-year-old man is now in custody after a police chase involving gunshots Saturday afternoon.

It started at around 2:40 p.m., when an officer attempted a traffic stop in the area of 8th Street and Goodwin Avenue. The male driver refused to stop and began driving erratically in a car.

The officer quickly discontinued the pursuit and notified other officers. The suspect vehicle travelled to the west side of the city where it was seen driving in the oncoming lanes of 33rd Street.

According to the Saskatoon Police Service, the suspect pointed what appeared to be a firearm at police and fired in the late stages of the incident. Officers returned fire, but no firearm injuries have been reported.

The chase came to an end when the suspect vehicle, a red Pontiac Grand Am, was rammed at 22nd Street East and 2nd Avenue by two police vehicles.

The suspect was treated for minor injuries and is in custody. Police Chief Clive Weighill says the man has a prior criminal record.

Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division and Forensic Identification units have been called in to review the incident.

CORRECTION: The Saskatoon Police Service had stated previously in a release that the suspect vehicle was stolen.
