Lieutenant Justin Boyes

Hometown Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and member of 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infatnry, based in Edmonton.

Justin Boyes was born in Saskatoon on February 6th, 1983. He graduated from Evan Hardy Collegiate and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 2006.

He had been with the PPCLI just under a year, after serving six years as a reservist with the North Saskatchewan Regiment.

He was deployed with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces serving in Afghanistan, and assigned to the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team.

Lt. Justin Boyes died on October 29th, 2009 at 26-years-old. He was killed when his foot patrol was hit by an IED blast 20 km southwest of Kandahar City in Panjwayi district. He was ten days into his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, while leading a platoon of Afghan National Police officers that he was mentoring. Two others were injured and evacuated by helicopter.

He is survived by his wife Alanna and son James.

He was described as a leader, selfless, loving, courageous, easy-going, highly professional, and a devoted family man.
