Corporal Shane Patrick Keating

Hometown Dalmeny, Saskatchewan and member of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Manitoba.

Shane Patrick Keating was born on December 17th, 1975 in Estevan. He lived in Dalmeny until grade 12 when he and his family moved to Saskatoon, where he graduated from Bishop Mahoney High School in 1994.

He was a Member of the North Saskatchewan Regiment from 1993 to 1997, and then joined the regular forces.

Keating previously served two tours in Bosnia and had been stationed in Afghanistan since August 1st, 2006.

Cpl. Shane Keating died on September 18th, 2006 at 30-years-old. While handing out school supplies, toys, balls and biscuits to local children, Cpl. Keating and three other soldiers were killed by a suicide bicycle bomb attack in the Panjwaii district. A man travelling on a bicycle donated his bomb near Canadian troops and several others were injured, including children.

Two other members of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and a 2 Field Ambulance personnel were also killed in the blast. Pte. Favid Byers, Cpl. Keith Morley and 2 Field Ambulance Cpl. Glen Arnold.

He is survived by his mother Judith, sisters Erin and Meghan, and brother Ken. His father Brian, a Saskatoon police officer, passed away several years prior.

Keating enjoyed motorcycling, curling and good conversation.

Keating was laid to rest in the military section of Saskatoon’s Woodlawn Cemetery.
