Calgary weather: When will the cold snap end?

ABOVE: Gary Bobrovitz has more on delays and cancellations at the Calgary airport.

CALGARY – Calgary has been under a cold spell for the past few days, but the weather is expected to warm up by mid-week.

The high on Sunday was a brisk -18°C, with temperatures dipping to a low of -25°C.

The frigid cold will continue on Monday with a forecasted high of just -14°C, and snow likely overnight.

And he can expect more of the same, for the next little while.

“There will be a few more days of extreme cold with some hope for a Chinook warm-up on Wednesday,” says Global Calgary Meteorologist Jordan Witzel. “The real excitement comes in a seasonal temperature outlook in time for the weekend, with temperatures closer to zero.”

Some say the cold is no big deal.

“I have a glass of wine every morning, I have some hot peppers every morning, and I can work like this whole day on,” said one Calgarian who’s accustomed to this weather.

“It doesn’t matter…we are Canadians – we like this weather you know,” he added.

CALGARY ROADS: SNOW AND ICE CLEARING

The City of Calgary says crews began working to clear priority 1 routes after the snowfall stopped around midnight on Monday. They hope to clear those routes within 24 hours, in accordance to their seven-day Snow Event plan.

Once crews are finished clearing priority 1 routes, they will move on to priority 2 routes, as well as feeder and collector roads.

NO SNOW ROUTE PARKING BAN

So far, the City of Calgary has not implemented a Snow Route Parking Ban.

When a Snow Route Parking Ban is in place, residents parked on designated Snow Routes must move their vehicles – and can be ticketed or towed if they don’t.
