Police confirm identity of New Year’s house party shooting victim

CALGARY – Police have released the identity of a man killed in a New Year’s Day shooting at a house party in the community of Killarney.

Investigators say 26-year-old Abdullahi Ahmed is the city’s first homicide victim of 2015.

Global News has received court documents that Ahmed was charged with possession of drugs and an assault. The dates of the charges range from 2006 to 2013.

Police say Ahmed has lived in Calgary for five years.

Emergency crews were called to a home in the 1900 block of 36 Street S.W. around 5 a.m. for reports of shots fired.

Responding officers located five people in and around the house with gunshot wounds, while two others later showed up at local hospitals for treatment.

In total, police say seven people were treated for gunshot wounds.

Police say some of the victims were injured while trying to leave the residence and a passerby driving past the residence.

The victims range in age from early 20’s to early 30’s, and are both male and female. Police say some suffered minor injuries while others were more seriously injured.

Friends had previously identified Ahmed as the man killed in the incident.

His family spent much of New Year’s Day by his bedside hoping for him to pull through, but he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

More than 50 people were at the house party and police have questioned about a dozen witnesses who were taken away from the scene on a city transit bus.

Police say the shooting is not believed to be a randomly targeted residence but investigators are still working to determine the motive and if one person was specifically targeted.

It’s believed the gunshots started within the residence and then travelled outside as the offender(s) fled.

Police have no suspects or descriptions of people and vehicles at this time and say many witnesses are not being cooperative.
