Packing away the holiday leftovers and decor

Watch above: Another Christmas is in the books and now comes the cleanup of everything from leftovers to trees. Aaron Streck reports.

SASKATOON – Christmas is in the books for another year, however the leftovers and cleanup are not. Eating the same thing until it’s gone can get old in a hurry.

A lot of families gorged on one, if not many, holiday feasts. Depending on its size, a turkey can feed about 10 people. The bigger the bird, the bigger the potential for leftovers.

“There’s a lot of stuff that can be done with turkey and a lot of people they don’t realize that there are many uses for turkey besides carving up a whole bird for Thanksgiving or Christmas,” said Manpreet Sethi, Aroma’s junior sous chef at the Radisson Hotel in Saskatoon.

Sethi is always being creative with ways to re-use turkey.

“We cross utilize it in the restaurant, we can make turkey soups with that or personally we make turkey samosas at home,” said Sethi. “We put an East Indian twist on it, phyllo pastry, put some chopped up turkey in there, a little bit of peas, serve with a cranberry chutney.”

Cooked turkey’s shelf life – up to a month if frozen right away.

“We also have a turkey pot pie which is what we usually do; it’s using the stuffing as a crust and turkey in there with a sauce, peas, corn,” said Sethi.

Garbage can also build up over the holidays. Typically, Loraas Disposal sees an increase in the amount of recycling at this time of year.

When it comes to trees, for some it’s as easy as putting it back in the box, while others have until the end of January to recycle their trees. The City of Saskatoon has opened temporary recycling stations around the city for unwrapped and undecorated pine trees.

Live trees can be dropped off at the following:
