Anti-capitalist protesters burn Harper effigy at downtown Montreal rally

MONTREAL – A demonstration which at its height numbered about 120 protesters took to the streets of downtown Montreal Thursday night, chanting against capitalism in general and the G20 summit in Cannes in particular.

“The G20 is basically the executive board of global capitalism,” said Jaggi Singh of the Anti-Captialist Convergence. “We’re here to oppose that agenda.”

Marching under a police escort, the protest left Phillips Square to rendez vous with protesters of the Occupy Montreal movement camped out in Victoria Square before heading back to Ste. Catherine St., listening to speeches delivered at stops along the route.

Once in front of Complexe Desjardins, the marchers burned an effigy of Prime Minister Stephen Harper before dispersing.

Police reported no incidents linked to the march.
