CALGARY – An Ontario company wants to help Calgarians cut down on their electricity bills.
The average person pays at least 20 per cent more than they have to; but a new gadget could help save hundreds of dollars a year.
The Efergy energy monitor allows users to see their electricity usage in real time displaying how much electricity is being used at that moment and how much it’s costing.
The monitor works by connecting to the homes electrical panel and sending information to the device wirelessly.

The technology isn’t new but it’s the first time it’s been offered in Alberta.
Carey Booth has been using the monitor; he says it’s been an incentive for his family to turn things off and learn how to conserve energy.
“As you turn things on and off, it will indicate how much it costs, how much power you’re using such as how many kilowatts, that’s the unit of measurement it uses,” says Booth. “It’s an effective way to realize how much your power costs when you turn something on and how much you save when you turn something off.”
The monitors cost just over $100 and can be installed easily.
In Ontario, they will be installed in every home within the next five years and in Vancouver, every new home is fitted with one.
