More than a dozen people are safe this morning after a being rescued from their sinking vessel near Steveston.

Crews from Royal Canadian Marine search and rescue were called around 7:30 last night to reports of a mayday call from the “Artist Life” outside Steveston Harbour.

The boat had issued the call after it began to take on water through a large hole as a result of the collision with the south training wall.

Nine people were rescued from the boat while another five were able to board a dinghy.

No one was seriously hurt.

The Canadian Coast Guard will monitor the now disabled vessel to minimize any negative environmental damage and prevent any hazards to navigation for other vessels.

Meanwhile, the Transportation Safety Board deployed an investigator to the scene. The TSB says it will “gather information and assess the occurrence.”
