WATCH: Burst heating pipe in China leaves thousands without heat

An underground heating pipeline in northwest China’s Gansu Province burst on Wednesday afternoon, leaving about 150,000 people without heating as temperatures there plummeted to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius.

The burst took place on a major road in the downtown of Jiuquan City, with a large amount of steam rising up, affecting traffic.

“The steam spread all around. Cars cannot find their way,” said a passer-by.

Heat supply in 39 stations in the city of Jiuquan were suspended. A local heating supply company has been engaged in repairing the pipeline throughout the night amid snowfall.

Some 300 government personnel called on senior residents in Suzhou District, the worst affected area, and allocated 1,000 heaters to help them confront the coldness.

The repair work is still going on as of Thursday morning.
