WINNIPEG – A man who stepped in to stop a domestic fight and ended up killing another man in the process won’t face any charges.

“We are not asking on any occasion for members of the public to take matters in to their own hands, to resort to violence,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen, with the Winnipeg Police Service.

In this case police say a 45 year old man did not follow that advice.

Back in May he witnessed a man and woman fighting in a McDonald’s parking lot on Notre Dame.

He tried to break up the fight and in the process he hit a 33 year old man and he hit the ground.

Marlon Dean Laronde, 33, died a few days later.

While police are still considering this a homicide, investigators did consult with the senior crown attorney to see if charges were warranted.

“The likelihood of conviction was taken into account,” said Michalyshen.

Police say if someone sees someone else’s safety in jeopardy he or she should call 911 first.
