Getting into Cirque

With 22 shows on stage around the world Cirque du Soleil has become an international sensation. Cirque began in Quebec with only 20 performers, but today there are more than 1300 artists performing each year. Getting to be one of those circus performers is no small feat. 16×9 spent four months following Cirque performers behind the scenes, giving new meaning to the term “running away with the circus”.

People come from all over the world to audition for Cirque-Japan, Mexico, Belgium, England and North America. For some, it means making dreams come true. But for others, being eliminated means tears, pain and broken dreams.

Most that make it to cirque have some form of athletic background. And for the lucky few who make it to Montreal, it means making the transformation from competitive athlete to performer. Watch 16×9 as Carolyn Jarvis follows three performers on their journey from auditions to training, and performance.
