REGINA – The city of Regina now has a plan for sorting the broken glass it collects from your recycle bin, and it could be used as part of future road construction.
In September, it was revealed that glass put into your blue bin was not being recycled.
Waste management company Emterra collected 650 tonnes of glass in the past year, but a city spokesperson was not able to say what percentage of glass is broken throughout the process.

Emterra is installing equipment that will separate broken glass from recyclables.
Broken glass delivered to the landfill has been used as part of concrete and gravel, but it went unused when arriving through the recycling program.
“Glass is a very difficult product to recycle and a very difficult product to find markets for,” said solid waste director Lisa Legault. “We’ll continue to look for the most efficient method, making sure it’s both financially and environmentally feasible.”
The city expects to begin recycling the broken glass by summer 2015.
