REGINA – Non-refundable glass products collected in the city’s blue bins are not being recycled.
Refundable glass products are recycled through SARCAN, but items like pickle and spaghetti jars are currently being stored by Emterra, the company contracted to handle recycling.
The City said Emterra is in the process of developing markets for the glass. However, broken glass is not being recycled at all.
Emterra collected 650 tonnes of glass in the past year, but a city spokesperson was not able to say what percentage of glass is broken throughout the process.
“We can have it broken while being tossed into the bin. It can be broken when Loraas transports it to the processing facility, as well as when the processing plant receives it,” said Lisa Legault, solid waste director with the City of Regina.
According to a press release issued by the City of Regina Wednesday afternoon, the majority of glass put into the blue bins is broken, and therefore not recycled.
