VANCOUVER – Two community mailboxes were stolen in Surrey on Thursday, coinciding with the announcement that almost 5,000 homes in Delta will become the first in Metro Vancouver to lose door-to-door delivery next year.
In a press release, Stephen Gale of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, says the theft of the mailboxes could be the future for many communities with the loss of door-to-door delivery.
Canada Post announced on Thursday that postal codes starting with V4K will be converting to community mailboxes in Fall 2015 as part of the plans announced last December. There will be 4,900 addresses impacted in Delta. In the next few days, each household will receive an information package with a mail-in survey. Canada Post says no employees will lose their job as a result of this transition.
The company announced that the loss of door-to-door delivery is part of a five-year plan to phase out home delivery.
