The investigation into the source of the weapons led to warrants being served at three locations and a vehicle in and around Lethbridge, Alta., on Wednesday.

Daniel Francis Bennett, who is 63, of Lethbridge, has been charged with nine counts of weapons trafficking.

Lethbridge police confirmed Bennett was a member of their force until he retired in 2001.

Ten handguns were seized during the execution of the warrants, but charges have not been laid in relation to those firearms.
