Canadian band, Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, or USS, was in town Tuesday night to play a sold out show at Average Joe’s Sports Bar alongside Mother Mother. They’re touring across Canada after releasing their latest single, ‘Shipwreck’.

“Shipwreck is a very important song for our band, specifically for me,” said lyricist, vocalist and guitarist, Ashley Buchholz.

The song is a message to the band’s fans who are suffering from mental illnesses, ranging from addiction to depression. Buchholz knows first hand how difficult it can be to ask for help.

“If you’re a person who doesn’t want to show a weakness…it’s something that you kind of keep hidden and keep secret. And then it builds up, and builds up and then it kind of pops.”

That’s why the band decided to support the Kids Help Phone organization.

“Ash’s lyrics and message run completely parallel with Kids Help Phone and what they’re attempting to do for young people,” said turntablist of USS, Jason ‘Human Kebab’ Parsons. “So it just seemed like a very natural fit.”

At the end of their ‘Shipwreck’ video, the displays the Kids Help Phone number along with the message: ‘If you’re one of the millions dealing with addiction or depression, please know that you are never alone. There is always help through the storm.’ In the new year, the band will be donating a portion of all merchandise sales on their 2015 tour stops to the organization, which saw more kids than ever access its services last year.

From Kids Help Phone’s 2013 statistics:
-Approx. 58 young people in AB called Kids Help Phone each day
-Young people from 180 communities in AB connect with their professional counsellors each year
-Young people in AB visit Kids Help Phone’s therapeutic online resources 63,000 times each year
-Kids Help Phone is there for 771,100 young people in AB or 19.2% of AB’s total population
