TORONTO – Toronto Mayor John Tory has chosen Denzil Minnan-Wong as the city’s new deputy mayor.
“He has proven he can get things done,” said Tory during an interview on Global’s The Morning Show.
“He’s been head of the public works committee for the last number of years and I intend to rely on him to do a lot things — to manage of lot of issues.”
The Ward 34 councillor confirmed the appointment on Twitter late Sunday night.
Minnan-Wong replaces outgoing deputy, Norm Kelly, who was selected by Rob Ford.
Rob Ford’s term as mayor ended last night, and his successor, Tory, is to be sworn in Tuesday along with the rest of the new council.

Ford ended his re-election bid after he was diagnosed with cancer, but did win a seat on council.

Tory’s executive committee will be made up of primarily right-leaning voices.
“I’ve tried to increase the number of women. I’ve tried to reach out to some new people. ‘New’ meaning that they haven’t been on the executive committee before,” Tory said.
“There’ll be all kinds of analysis and criticism of what I’ve done.”
“I’ve done my best. You’ve got 44 people. You’re trying to take advantage of the talents of as many as you can. But also choose a team that can get some things done with me,” he said.
At-large members include Ana Bailao, Frank Di Giorgio, Mary-Margaret McMahon, and Gary Crawford who has been pegged as the city’s budget chief.
The committee chairs are as follows:
James Pasternak, Community Development and Recreation
Michael Thompson, Economic Development
David Shiner, Planning and Growth
Jaye Robinson, Public Works and Infrastructure
Paul Ainslie, Government Management Committee
Cesar Palacio, Licensing and Standards
Michelle Berardinetti, Parks and Environment
Ward 15 councillor Josh Colle has been selected as the new Toronto Transit Commission chair. His position will need to be approved by city council.
In addition to Minnan-Wong, Tory has also decided to appoint three other deputies for regional representation: Vince Crisanti (West), Pam McConnell (South) and Glenn De Baeremaeker (East).
As rumoured last week, Tory will sit on the police services board with Shelley Carroll and Chin Lee as the new additions.
