Snow began falling across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island Friday night, catching many people off guard.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning just before 11 p.m. Friday night, and cautioned motorists to adjust their driving accordingly.

Temperatures in the Lower Mainland have been unseasonably warm and mild, with some areas breaking temperature records on Thursday.

The high in Vancouver was 13 degrees Friday morning, but quickly plummeted as soon as the sun went down.

Global News meteorologist Yvonne Schalle says she expects light snow to continue overnight into Saturday morning.

East Vancouver Island can expect 5 to 10 cm of snowfall overnight, with gusty winds at times, while in Metro Vancouver, it will be windy as well, with between 5 to 10 cm of snow expected by Saturday morning.

But there’s good news for Grey Cup revelers — the sun should break through by the afternoon, with a high of -1 degree for Saturday, and +1 degree and sunny on Sunday.
