Battery powered buses hit the road in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG — Battery powered buses, charged at giant plug-in stations, will begin plying a regular Winnipeg Transit route. Officials showed off the technology Thursday at Richardson International Airport.

Winnipeg bus maker New Flyer industries says “up to 4” new environmentally friendly Xcelsior battery-electric buses will be joining Winnipeg Transit’s fleet of over 530 diesel-fuelled buses that currently service the city.

The new battery powered buses will operate on a daily 40 kilometer, two hour route from the Winnipeg Airport to East Kildonan and back to the airport where a charging station recharges the buses. The batteries have enough charge for the buses to operate for five hours and will only take ten minutes to recharge after their two hour route.

The battery-powered bus project, underway since 2011, includes $3.4 million in federal funding and $94,000 from the province.
