Hunter shoots grizzly bear to save his dog

Conservation officers are calling it a near miss.

A hunter from Lumby was out deer hunting last week when a grizzly bear went for his dog.

According to Sgt. Josh Lockwood of the B.C. Conservation service, when the man yelled, the bear charged at him.

He was able to get off two shots from his rifle from about 10 yards away, which caused the bear to run into the woods.

The next day Conservation officers searched the area and found the 550 pound male grizzly about 500 feet from the initial encounter point.

Lockwood says if the man had not shot the bear, he would have been seriously injured or killed.

The shooting which has been ruled justified by Conservation Services happened on the Harris Creek Forest Service Road south of Lumby.
