Patient groups must say if their funding comes from pharma companies

TORONTO – Patient advocacy groups which get some part of their funding from pharmaceutical companies do have to disclose that information before lobbying the government.

But that apparent conflict doesn’t preclude them from advocating for a drug to be covered. Instead, the minister of health welcomes them.

And Ontario’s Minister of Health says he welcomes the groups, regardless of where their funding comes from.

“I welcome their involvement; they are deeply committed individuals who bring an important perspective to discussion about both illness as well as potential therapies,” he said during an interview at Queen’s Park Tuesday. “These are individuals that either themselves or perhaps family members or neighbours, coworkers have been affected by various illnesses or diseases. I applaud them for their advocacy.”

Global News asked the Ministry of Health how many of the patient groups are funded by a pharmaceutical company and is awaiting reply.

A Global News investigation found pharmaceutical companies were funding organizations fighting to get drugs manufactured by the companies covered by provincial health insurance programs.

Patient advocacy groups lobby the government to cover the cost of some drugs. Prior to lobbying they have to check a box on their application noting whether they have a conflict – like receiving money from companies which manufacture the drug they want covered by health insurance.

But it’s a common practice – dozens of patient advocacy groups in Ontario receive funding from pharmaceutical companies.
