SASKATOOON – Saskatoon city crews and contractors are attempting to clean up priority 1 streets after a major snowfall in Saskatchewan Saturday. Environment Canada Meteorologist Rob Paola says a system passed through central and southern areas of the province from the west.

“An ‘Alberta Clipper’ tracked across southern Saskatchewan yesterday, basically along the TransCanada … spreading an area of snow mainly through the northern grainbelt, Yellowhead highway quarter up through Prince Albert into central Saskatchewan,” said Paola.

Snowfall amounts ranged from seven to 13 centimetres across the Saskatoon area, mainly falling from late Saturday morning into last evening. Central Saskatchewan generally received about 10 centimetres of snow, according to Environment Canada.

“At the beginning of the event, some mixed ice pellets or even a little bit of wet snow or freezing rain mixing in and in fact further south through Kindersley, Elbow, Davidson down towards Moose Jaw … we had freezing rain warnings in the morning for those areas,” said Paola.

“In the afternoon, colder air worked in behind the system and that’s when you got more of the snow sticking around, winds picked up, there’s a little bit of blowing and drifting snow as well.”

Saskatoon police issued a warning for motorists to be cautious after traffic lights were taken down on Boychuck Drive early Saturday afternoon.

“Road conditions were not good, Saskatchewan Highways was not recommending travel over many highways through west-central and central Saskatchewan yesterday,” said Paola.

On Sunday, flurries or light snow is expected to continue off and on through the day in Saskatoon with a high of minus 10. Paola says winter is here and unfortunately there are only small breaks for Saskatchewan.

“There’s another system coming across by Tuesday which may bring in some snow followed by much colder air for mid- to late-week,” said Paola.
