REGINA – Winter will soon arrive and Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) wants drivers to be ready.
This November’s traffic safety spotlight is safe winter driving and it’s the first of its kind.
“That first snowfall always seems to throw drivers for a loop,” said Andrew Cartmell, SGI president and CEO.
“We tend to see collisions spike that first day as drivers adjust to the winter roads. They forget they need to slow down and take their time.”

In November 2013, there were 13,072 SGI claims related to winter driving, down over 2,500 claims from the previous year.
Police will be on the lookout for people driving too fast for road conditions. The fine is $175 and is dependent on weather conditions at the time.
According to preliminary SGI stats from November 2012 to March 2013, driving too fast for road conditions contributed to nine deaths in the province.
Winter driving safety tips:
- Adjusting speed accordingly when conditions are less than favourable, like when roads are icy or there is low visibility.
- Drivers should clear snow from their vehicles to see and be seen. Be sure all windows are completely defrosted; the fine for obscured vision is $125.
- Motorists should leave more distance in-between them and the one in front. SGI says it takes three to 12 times more stopping distance on ice and snow than required on dry roads.
- Allow extra time to reach destinations to eliminate the temptation of driving too fast for road conditions.
- Install winter tires for better traction on icy surfaces.

“It’s common sense, but if you can make habits out of these simple tips, you will help keep you, your loved ones and other road users safe,” said Cartmell.
