What you need to know about Keystone ahead of U.S. Senate vote today

Backers of a measure to approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline were reportedly scrambling early Tuesday to secure the final vote required for the U.S. Senate to OK the project.

The upper house of the U.S. federal legislature is scheduled to vote in the late afternoon on whether to approve the $8-billion mega-project that will link Alberta’s oilsands to refineries along the U.S. Gulf Coast via a 1,900km-stretch of pipeline.

Supporters include all 45 Republican senators as well as 14 Democrats, mostly from pro-oil states that will benefit economically from the pipeline project. If successful, the measure will land on U.S. President Barack Obama’s desk later this week.
